My favorite type of lighting for portraits is window light. It's free, it's easy to use, and it's always available in the day. While in Patagonia, my tour group and I went into a snack shop and this man was sitting at one of the tables. We all recognized he had an incredible face, and he was nice enough to pose for everyone at the window. The background went dark when exposing for the highlights on his face, and that was ideal. However, I darkened the wall more using the dodge tool so all of our attention goes to his face. On this shoulder, there was a double white stripe that was a design in his shirt, and I cloned that out because it was distracting. Our eyes are drawn to very light areas in a photo as well as strong, graphic lines, and a successful photo is usually one in which our focus is riveted on the subject, not on other things in the picture. My settings were 1/160, f/7.1, with 1600 ISO. I used a 24-105mm lens to make the shot.
