Once you get hooked on bird photography, it's hard to stop. There are so many species (about 10,000 in the world) and so many of them are stunning in their coloration and in their graceful and dynamic flight patterns. Generally, the smaller the bird, the more difficult it is to get a good picture because they are so fast and they fill so little of the frame even with long lenses. All of the pictures I show of beautiful, small birds means there is dozens of attempts that ended in failure. This is a Lady Gouldian finch from Australia, and even though I photographed it in captivity at Butterfly World in Miami, it was still a serious challenge. It was perched on an unattractive feeder, so I replaced the entire background and added the branch. My settings were 1/500, f/10, 1000 ISO, and I used a Canon 500mm f/4 lens hand held.
