I find it hard to take great pictures of zebras. Like horses, they usually don't photograph well unless they are in motion. 99% of the time they are grazing or standing around keeping an eye out for predators. The expression I captured here lasts not more than a second or two. I loved the mother and calf together with the mother emoting, but the problem was the original background. There was a very busy out of focus tree behind the animals, and I didn't do anything with the picture for several years. It seemed virtually impossible to fix. In my August issue of Photo Insights, my free monthly eMagazine, I explain how I replaced the sky and retained all the detail in the manes and in the shrubbery. The sky replacement feature in Photoshop recognizes skies very well, but if the sky is largely comprised of out of focus tree branches and shrubs, the software can't differentiate between the subjects and the sky. I explain in the upcoming issue how I managed to take essentially a failed image and make it work.
