Frogs can be both cute and comical. I think this Surinam horned frog qualifies as both. I photographed this South American species during one of my frog and reptile workshops. Shooting at eye level with small creatures makes the images much more compelling because it's a point of view few people ever take the time to see. I used a 50mm macro lens along with a ring flash. This kind of flash unit envelopes small subjects with light, thus illuminating both dorsal and ventral surfaces. Had I used a typical portable flash that sits atop the camera in the hotshoe, the light would skim the top of the amphibian creating too much contrast. My settings were 1/200, f/32, 250 ISO. I almost always use the smallest lens aperture when doing macro work to show as much detail as possible. Focus stacking at f/8 would be the ideal . . . if and only if the subject doesn't move or twitch at all. The next frog and reptile workshop will be Feb. 25 & 26, 2023 held in Kansas City.
