This is a curious black-backed jackal pup I captured in the Masai Mara Conservancy in Kenya. I prefer diffused light for outdoor portraits of both people and animals because of the lack of contrast and the absence of harsh shadows. In this case, though, the sun was out but it was in the perfect position to illuminate the pup’s face. It was also ever so slightly softened by a thin layer of high clouds; notice how the catchlights in the eyes are fairly large and not dots of light which would have indicated full, non-diffused sunlight. The sun was also fairly low in the sky because I shot this at 8:45am according to the meta data. I took this with a 400mm focal length, and the settings were 1/640, f/9, and 800 ISO.
