I took this shot in the Pantanal region of Brazil. This is the most reliable area to consistently see and photograph jaguars. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 telephoto along with a 2x teleconverter giving me 1000mm of focal length. The light was low, so losing two f/stops of light due to the teleconverter was risky but I wanted to fill the frame with this beautiful cat and his almost-human expression. This image is uncropped. My settings were 1/640, f/11, and 1000 ISO, and I was shooting from a boat. I shot this in 2014 when I was still worried about excessive noise. Now, with my Canon R5, I feel much more comfortable raising the ISO and, consequently, using a faster shutter. I have two Pantanal trips scheduled for the end of this year. The Nov. date is sold out, but there is still space available for early December.
