This unusual deer species is a sika deer from Japan. I photographed it in the wild when I led a tour there in 2015. I used a Canon 500mm f/4 in conjunction with a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm of focal length. The rule for choosing a shutter speed with a telephoto lens is the shutter should be the reciprocal of the focal length or faster. In other words, to guarantee a sharp picture (especially since I was hand holding the large lens) the shutter speed should be 1/700th of a second or faster. My settings were 1/1000, f/10, and 1000 ISO. When shooting with long lenses, I prefer to use an aperture in the f/10 to f/16 range if there is enough light. This mitigates, at least to a small degree, the loss of depth of field due to the tremendous magnification.
