This is a juvenile mountain lion, and like most animal subjects they are fast. A certain look, an attractive pose, or a poignant expression often lasts for a fraction of a second. In the old days of shooting film, high end cameras had typical frame rates of 5 fps. Now, we have 20 and even 30 frames per second, and along with super fast autofocus, auto exposure, and eye tracking, we can capture special moments that were usually missed in the past. This particular moment when the cat grabbed a tree and looked toward our cameras lasted for probably a half second. In post-processing, I used the burn tool in Photoshop to darken the background to direct our attention to the cat. I also lightened his eyes a little because they were slightly underexposed. My settings were 1/1250, f7.1, and 3200 ISO.
