One of the remarkable portraits I've done is this shot of a Mursi tribal woman from Ethiopia. The lip plate she's wearing evolved from a time when the tribe wanted to protect their women and girls from being kidnapped by black slave traders. Over the centuries, it has changed from an ugly disfigurement to a sign of beauty. I photographed her in front of a piece of black velvet so nothing in the background would distract our attention from the subject. I used a 24-105mm lens set to 80mm for the shot, and I used a tripod. My settings were 1/20, f/11, and 640 ISO. This was taken in 2011 when I was still using the Canon 5D Mark II and I was trying to keep my ISO as low as possible, hence the slow shutter.
