I am in Lalibela, Ethiopia now. This city is famous for its 12th century rock-hewn churches. It took 23 years and 40,000 workers using hand tools to carve these structures out of bedrock. Instead of using blocks of rock to construct the churches, they removed rock from the ground and the ancient structures are what's left -- the original bedrock carved into buildings complete with rooms, windows, doors, and Christian art. It is truly astonishing. This shot is of a young girl as seen from the plateau overlooking the most famous church, St. George. The devout Christians here wear white as a sign of purity, and I loved the way her clothes stood out against the muted colors of the rock church. The settings were 1/125, f/5.6, and 320 ISO, and I used a 105mm focal length.
