I photographed this beautiful red fox when I led a photo tour to Newfoundland in eastern Canada. So often with wildlife photography we don't get what we want -- regarding the pose, the lighting, the background, the contrast, etc. In this case, everything worked. The lighting was especially beautiful, the pose is perfect, the background is muted so it's not distracting, and there is even an effective catchlight in the eye. The angle of the light from the side created pronounced texture in the fox's fur. In addition, due to the slope of the ground, I was shooting at very close to eye level. I used a 500mm focal length plus a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm, and the settings were 1/250, f/11, and 320 ISO. I took this picture in 2017 when I was more concerned about noise than I am now, so I kept the ISO low. In retrospect, though, I should have raised the ISO so my shutter speed would have been faster given the focal length I was using.
