One of the most amazing things I've seen in my travels is the remarkable Snow and Ice Festival in Harbin, China. Ten thousand people work to create it, and the magnificent structures last until Spring when they all melt. For the ice buildings, the blocks of ice taken from a local river are cored such that colored fluorescent tubes are inserted. At night, the sight is simply dazzling. To take this photograph with an elevated perspective of the ice city, I climbed three flights of ice stairs in an ice building while I held on to an ice railing. It was minus 35 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 37 Celsius) at night, and I was happy that my Canon equipment didn't have a problem in the extreme cold. Notice the ice slide in the foreground. My settings for this shot were 1/2 second, f/22, 200 ISO, and I used a 24-105mm lens set to 105mm. In this tricky exposure situation, I took a few test shots and studied the results on the LCD monitor. Then, using the exposure compensation feature, I dialed in the correct settings. I'm bringing another photo tour group here at the end of 2018.
