Brilliant backlighting always makes dramatic images, and that's what caught my eye here. The background behind the white tailed deer was shaded forest, and the striking contrast between it and the edge lighting on the animals and the grasses made the shot. The deer are largely obscured by the center tree, but I still like the picture primarily because there is enough of the antlers showing. That adds a design component. My settings were 1/640, f/7.1, and 2000 ISO, and I used a 400mm focal length lens. My biggest concern was holding focus o the trees as well as the deer given the fact I was using a long lens and depth of field was inherently shallow. Because the animals were so close to the trees and the subjects-to-camera distance was relatively far (approximately 100 feet), I felt the f/7.1 aperture was sufficient to render both planes of focus sharply.
