Of all the incredible make up jobs at the Brazilian carnival, this one is my favorite. I had an access pass to photograph along the parade as the floats and the thousands of dancers passed by, and I was able to take a lot of good pictures that way. This kind of closeup portraiture, though, was impossible during the actual procession. So, I went to the staging area just before the thousands of people entered the main stadium and selected individuals to photograph. In this way i could fill the frame with remarkable faces like this young lady. Everyone was happy to be photographed, and it was an incredible experience to have photographic access to such an event where creativity and artistry knows no bounds. My settings for this photo were 1/800, f/5.0, 1600 ISO. The large banks of mercury vapor lights provided enough illumination to hand hold my camera without the need for flash. Whenever subjects are lit with fluorescent or mercury vapor lights, I always use auto white balance.

Jim - Hi Steve, Like it usually works -- through a friend of a friend. And, as always, a bit of money is involved.

Steve - Great images! How were you able to get a photo pass to an event like this?
