I did something crazy in terms of travel -- even for me with my very busy schedule. After the Venice workshop, my wife and I flew to Sao Paulo, Brazil to photograph carnival there. It's a totally different experience than Venice. The Brazilian carnival is wild and sexy and set to heart-pounding Samba music. Even though I was operating on two hours of sleep (on the plane sitting up) in a 48 hour stretch, the wildness of the event kept me awake. The colors, the floats, the costuming, and the music all go together to create the 'mother of all parties'! The event occurs all night -- until dawn -- and the parade route is lined with banks of lights so no flash is required. I used mostly 1600 to 2000 ISO, and I varied my lenses depending on where I was shooting from. The settings for this image were 1/250, f/6.3, 1600, and I used my 100-400mm Canon zoom. I had to keep the shutter speed fairly fast because everyone was dancing. I photographed carnival here in 1993 with film where the technical challenges were immense in the relatively low light, and I got just a handle of decent shots. With digital, I was able to take hundreds of amazing images.
