I found this beautiful old gate on the east coast of Scotland. It opened to a stunning field of wildflowers, and the morning fog meant the ambient light was as diffused as possible. The ideal for floral photography is soft light because the minimal contrast brings out the colors dramatically -- which is the opposite of what most people think. I wanted complete depth of field but I didn't have a tripod with me, and that necessitated a fairly high ISO. My first serious digital camera -- the Canon 1Ds Mark II I bought in 2005 --was so noisy that 1600 ISO was borderline unusable. Today, 1600 ISO on many cameras is like shooting with 400 ISO. With Neat Image software to mitigate the noise, I feel perfectly comfortable shooting in so many situations now without a tripod. My settings were 1/60, f/20, and 1600 ISO. I took this with a 16-35mm wide angle set to the widest focal length.
