This is the remarkable interior of the Church of the Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was built on the spot where Czar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. It’s ceiling and columns -- all 75,000 square feet of them (7000 square meters) -- are covered in stunning mosaic tiles too beautiful to describe. In order to show all of the detail, and to overcome the contrast, I took this picture with a 7-frame HDR sequence. The cavernous interior is quite dark, so my Sigma 14mm f/1.8 wide angle lens came in very handy due to the extremely large lens aperture which allowed me to keep the ISO reasonably low. My settings were f/1.8 and 1600 ISO. The shutter speed varied to create the bracketed images, and the slowest speed was 1/60. I used one f/stop increment exposures between the frames, and I handheld the camera since no tripods were allowed.

Nancylee Mudd - This is s fantastic shot! I can’t imagine this done without a tripod. Did you gain special access? When we were there it was so crowded, you couldn’t possibly have done a 7 shot hdr pano without being buffeted around.
