This remarkable spiral staircase is in the Monastery of Melk in Melk, Austria. I photographed it with a Canon 15mm fisheye. The interesting thing about fisheye lenses is they bend straight lines, and in most instances the effect is novel but it gets old very fast. However, when you photograph something that's already round, like a ceiling dome or a spiral, there is no apparent distortion because you can't make something that's round MORE round. The depth of field of extreme wide angle lenses -- and fisheyes fall into that category -- is from a few inches in front of the lens to infinity. I used an f/4 lens aperture for this shot, and as you can see, the depth of field is complete. My other settings were 1/60 and 400 ISO. I handheld the shot because no tripods were allowed. My understand now is that, unfortunately, no photos are allowed to be taken in this place.
