I photographed this aerial view of 16th century Chenonceau Chateau in the Loire Valley, France from a hot air balloon. My photo tour group and I had just passed over the chateau (the wind and the skilled pilot placed us in the perfect position), and I grabbed this image as we were floating away from it. Even when the sun is close to the horizon -- this was about 15 minutes after sunrise -- contrast can appear to be more harsh than desirable. In post-processing using Adobe Camera Raw, I lightened the shadows and toned down the highlights just enough. I used a 24-105mm lens for the shot, and my settings were 1/1000, f/4, and 500 ISO. Note I used a large lens aperture because depth of field was not a relevant consideration due to the distances involved.
