A 'perfect storm' happened early this morning with a great grey owl. The bird was perched on top of a young spruce tree just after sunrise. The sun was behind the owl, and the backlighting was beautiful. From my shooting position, I calculated that the angle of the light would readily show brilliant transillumination through the feathers. While perched, the eye tracking feature of the Canon R5 locked onto the owl's face, and then it took flight with the perfect trajectory to show the stunning backlight. The autofocus mechanism kept focus long enough so I could capture several amazing frames at 20 fps. My settings were 1/3200, f/7.1, and 4000 ISO. I used daylight white balance which retained the golden colors of the early morning sun, and I used a central cluster of focus points.

Linda Purdom - Wow!! All your owl photos have been extraordinary. But this last photo with the backlighting is outstanding. That one enlarged and framed would catch the eye of anyone walking into a home of office. Thank you for sharing those stunning photos.
