In relatively low light circumstances, if you can use a wide angle lens, you can get away with a slower shutter speed and a smaller lens aperture with a reasonably low ISO. Wide angle lenses show less apparent movement, hence the ability to use the lower ISO and slower shutter. I shot this iceberg from a dinghy, and the small boat was obviously moving up and down is the water. I asked the person operating the boat to get as close as possible to the ice because that allowed me to use a 14mm super wide angle. This lens created a wonderful composition, but I didn't have to worry about using a fast shutter speed like I would have if my lens had a been a telephoto. With a 14mm lens from a gently moving boat, I'd feel confident that 1/60th of a second would give me a sharp picture.
