People who take my photo tours always ask me what equipment they should bring. I know gear gets heavy, but if you bought a lens or flash, there was a reason you wanted it so, in my opinion, bring it. For example, I don't always use flash in the field, but sometimes I do. I never know when I'll want to use it. In this mammoth cave in Malaysian Borneo, one would not think a flash would be relevant simply because it's so huge and the light from a flash would be lost on the dark, distant walls of the cave. However, I found a situation where it was perfect. I used fill flash here to give some illumination to the rock formation in the foreground. This is why I always carry a flash with me no matter what. This is actually a picture taken with a medium format film camera (Mamiya RZ 67 II) in 2002, three years before i went digital.

Jim - Daniel, The book is written so it's easy to understand and I know you'll feel more comfortable with flash (and maybe even like using it) after reading it. You can carry it with you on an iPhone or iPad for reference when you are out shooting. It's worth $10 to start being creative with flash and understanding it.

Jim - Hi Dan, No, I haven't. I've written an eBook on flash, not a paper book in print. I wrote 15 books in print before I started producing only eBooks. I know many people prefer the traditional paper book, but it takes two years from the signing of a book contract until the book is in the stores. When I write an eBook, as soon as I'm finished it is on my website for sale.
In case you're interested, here is the link to the eBook on Flash:

It will help you a lot.
