All great fine art photographs have one thing in common: They have a very strong design. And design comes down to one component: beautiful lines. This is true for architecture, great nudes, landscapes, dance images, wildlife, brids in flight, and pretty much everything else. I don't include photojournalism in this because that genre of photography is often dependent on emotion. But . . . when you have a great image like the flag raising on Iwo Jima, graphic design (and emotion) is the reason that picture has become a classic. A case in point is this simple picture of an Asian vine snake i shot at my semi-annual frog and reptile workshop in St. Louis. The lovely lines of the snake make the picture work. Yes, the color is good, the subject matter is compelling, and the lighting reveals all the detail we need to see, but the real strength of this picture in my opinion is the graphic design.
