Crowned cranes are beautiful birds when they are walking around browsing for food. In flight, though, they are spectacular. For birds with large wings, I slow my shutter down from the usual 1/3200 to 1/2500 or even 1/2000. Large wings don't beat as fast as small wings, and the lower speed helps reduce the ISO. Another important consideration when photographing birds with large wings is that you need to compose the picture with a lot of space in front of and above the bird to accommodate the extension of the large wings. You don't want to lose the beautiful tips of the feathers by shooting too tightly. My settings for this shot were 1/2500, f/8, and 640 ISO, and I used a 70-200mm lens. This image is cropped about 20%.
