Every sunrise and sunset here in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, my photo tour group and I try to position ourselves so we can photograph a dynamic silhouette in front of the ball of the sun. This particular evening, there were many animals on the crest of a distant hill, and we hoped one of them could be photographed in a perfect silhouette with the orange sky as a background. The success of silhouetted images is entirely dependent on shape -- which is defined by attractive lines. The horns of an impala make a beautiful shape, and I was able to take several frames as a small group of them walked right in front of the sun. I used a 500mm lens plus a 1.4x teleconverter, giving me 700mm of focal length. I shot this with a small lens aperture to make sure both the impala and the sun were sharp. My settings for this were 1/500, f16, and 250 ISO.
