I am in Montana right now conducting a winter wildlife photo workshop. It was a special treat to photograph these two beautiful snow leopard cubs yesterday. They are 5 months old, and they are sisters. I purposely chose a location protected from the sun because diffused light is less contrasty. I was using a telephoto lens — a 100-400mm Canon zoom — and that meant I had to be cognizant of the depth of field challenge with two subjects. It was crucial that both of them be in focus. Even though I was using a reasonably small lens aperture, it was important the two leopards were equidistant to the lens. Had one of them been, say, 4 to 6 inches closer or farther than the other one, I probably wouldn’t have been able to make both of them sharp. Therefore, I waited for the moment when their heads were virtually on the same plane before I knew the image would be successful. My settings were 1/1250, f/11, and 1250 ISO.
