In 2014 I attended the eagle festival in western Mongolia. It seemed like nothing much had changed since the 13th century when Genghis Khan conquered most of Asia and even part of Europe. The weathered faces, the powerful horses, and the rugged terrain definitely indicated I wasn't in Kansas anymore! I always hope for overcast conditions when photographing people and animals, and even though direct sun can work sometimes, with diffused light there is minimum contrast, few black shadows, no blown highlights, the subjects aren't squinting from bright light, and the exposure is always easy without reliance on HDR. My settings for this shot were 1/1000, f/7.1, and 400 ISO.
