This is the old harbor in Gdansk, Poland. It was here that World War II began in Europe with the bombing of Polish Navy ships on September 1, 1939. 90% of the old city was destroyed by the bombs and the subsequent fighting. It took decades to rebuild, and today there is hardly a scar from that terrible time to be seen. All cities, young, old, large, small, historic or unremarkable, look better in photographs when captured at twilight. Lots of times I’ll spend part of the day planning where I’ll be shooting at twilight, and when the time comes, I shoot as fast as i can in an attempt to be in several great locations during the very brief few minutes that comprise the blue hour. Twilight lasts longer as the date gets closer to June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere (or December 21 in the Southern Hemisphere), and the closer you are to the North and South Pole. In Alaska, for example, a mid-summer twilight can last three hours. On or near the Equator, twilight is around 10 minutes. My settings for this shot were 1/4 second, f/4, 200 ISO.
