This is a blue-streaked lory, and it is native to the southern Molucca islands in Indonesia. I photographed it in an aviary in the bird park on Bali, but even in captivity, it is quite difficult to get a good picture. A lot of patience is required because, like so many birds, they never hold a pose or stay in one spot for more than a couple of seconds. To be able to shoot down on a bird such that we can see the dorsal side of it is unusual, so I was happy to capture this interesting position. I use AI servo, or continuous tracking, so the AF system can quickly adjust to any movement the bird makes that might change the subject-to-camera distance. Diffused light was essential here to make the beautiful colors of the lory really pop. Contrary to what you might think, an overcast sky makes colors look more saturated than direct sunlight. My settings were 1/320, f/5.6, 2500 ISO. I shot this with the Canon 100-400mm zoom, and this image is uncropped.
