This is an eastern rosella from Australia. They are fairly approachable, so I was able to photograph it with a 100-400mm Canon telephoto. One of the things I’ve become aware of as I photograph more and more birds is that even though they seem to be on a single plane as viewed from a distance, that’s very deceiving. The rounded contours of their bodies mean it’s usually not a good idea to use a large lens aperture. It’s so easy to be focused on the eye while the wing is out of focus, for example, especially when using a long lens which is almost a given when photographing birds. Therefore, I like to close down to at least f/8 and, if possible, f/11 or even f/16 if I have enough light and the ISO is raised. My settings for this picture were 1/320, f/8, and 400 ISO.
