I photographed this unique reflection on Moeraki Boulders Beach on the South Island of New Zealand. The rainwater trapped in the boulder reflected the sky, and the ocean reflected the sky as well but from a different angle. For maximum drama, I used a 14mm Sigma f/1.8 wide angle lens placed just 2 or 3 feet from the foreground to make it disproportionately large compared to the background. As I’ve said before, you can’t only rely on the inherent extensive depth of field of a wide angle lens when the camera-to-subject is so short. You also need a small lens aperture if you want everything sharp from the foreground to the background. With a 14mm lens, I focus about five feet from the camera, and this gives me as much depth of field as possible given the working distance, the focal length, and the aperture. My settings were 1/50, f/16, and 800 ISO.
