One of the most compelling masks I’ve seen at this year’s carnival in Venice is this stunning black and red creation. The fact that the eyes are covered by the silver mesh adds to the eerie fantasy. I shot this with a 60mm focal length using a 24-105mm lens, and I made a small mistake. I was using aperture priority, and the lens was set to f/4. This isn’t enough depth of field given that I was just four feet from the model. Some of the feathers that protrude out from the costume are not as tack sharp as I would have liked. I should have used f/8 or f/11, but I was shooting fast and forgot to check my settings. This particular model moved constantly, and I didn’t want to miss the moment. The shutter speed was 1/500, and the ISO was 500.

Jim - Hi Gary, Thanks for the compliment. There is nothing that I know of in Scotland that approaches any kind of costuming like what they have in Venice. In France, there are a number of costumed events where these same kinds of costumes are worn, but not in Scotland. If you know something that I don't, please let me in on it. I've wanted to photograph some children or early teens with amazing red hair in Scotland, and I'll do some research to see if I can make it happen. Would that appeal to you?

Gary Goelitz - Gorgeous photograph. Could you please arrange something similar in Scotland during your photography workshop?
