This is a gharial crocodile I captured in Chitwan National Park in Nepal. Even though I prefer diffused lighting from an overcast sky when photographing wildlife, front light like I had here can work well, too. Notice that I darkened the water both top and bottom with the burn tool in Photoshop to place more emphasis on the reptile. This is a technique I use often with all kinds of subjects. I learned this from studying the paintings of Rembrandt when I was 20. He made the subject in his paintings light if he wanted to draw your eye there. The peripheral subjects remained dark and muted in tone. My settings for this shot were 1/2000, f/14, and 2000 ISO. I took this picture from a boat on the river with a 500mm focal length plus a 1.4x teleconverter, giving me 700mm of focal length.
