One of the (non-venomous) snakes we had at the frog and reptile workshop was this green tree python. My favorite color is green, so I always find this guy to be a particularly compelling subject. To emphasize the remarkable texture in the scales, I took the ring flash off the lens and held it below the snake. The light skimmed the surface of the skin and created the pronounced texture. The nose of the snake became overexposed because it is yellow and was very close to the flash, so in post-processing I decreased the exposure on that area. My settings were 1/32, 1/200, 400 ISO, and I used a 50mm macro lens. Again, I used manual exposure mode, and the ring flash was set to ETTL which provided the automatic exposure.
