This was a risky picture in that I took a handheld HDR 5-frame sequence of these novice monks in Bagan, Myanmar. Shooting HDR without a tripod is a challenge in and of itself, but to include people is especially risky because of their subtle movements during the sequence of frames. The reason I felt it necessary to shoot HDR was because of the significant contrast in the alcove of the temple. Through my local guide, I asked the boys to be as still as they could be. I made four attempts and was surprised I was able to produce such a sharp picture. I assembled the HDR composite within Photoshop. In a situation like this, you have to raise the ISO high enough so the slowest shutter speed isn’t too slow. Here, the slowest shutter in the sequence was 1/30th of a second. I took this with a 24-105mm lens at 35mm.
