I took this shot during my semi-annual frog and reptile workshop in St. Louis. It's a red eye tree frog from Costa Rica. I used a ring flash because the kind of light provided by this specialized flash envelopes the subject and simulates diffused outdoor light which, in my opinion, is ideal for macro work. I used a 50mm macro lens, and that meant I was just inches from the frog. The closer the flash is to the subject, the softer is the light. The close proximity also means there is enough light for the smallest possible lens aperture, f/32 in this case. That gave me as much depth of field as possible without focus stacking. I handheld the shot, and the shutter speed -- 1/125 -- just has to sync with the flash. It doesn't affect the exposure.
