On one of my photo tours to Kenya, my group came upon a bloat of hippos. Two of them were in serious combat, and the action got pretty intense. This was after sunset and the light level was quite low. My shutter speed was 1/500, which actually was too slow for this kind of action. The ISO was already 5000, and I didn’t want to go higher. It’s a tough choice between choosing a faster shutter and trying to keep the ISO down. Fortunately, the post-processing software we have now to mitigate noise is superb. It turned out that the speed I used did a great job at producing a sharp picture. I did enhance the sharpness with Topaz Sharpen AI, though, followed by Topaz DeNoise.
My lens aperture was f/5.6, and the focal length was 400mm. Years ago when we all shot film, I never could have gotten this shot.
