I don't remember if I've ever posted this before, but I made this composite in the 80's (first with film and then with digital scans) and it remains one of my all time favorite images. In California, I hired a horse that could rear on command and purposely photographed it (with a Mamiya RZ 67 medium format film camera) against a white sky. I sandwiched the transparency of the horse with a shot of lightning and copied that combination with transparency duplicating film. The white background allowed the storm to show through (lightning photographs purple or magenta, depending on your white balance). When Photoshop became available, I recreated the concept using the 'darken' blend mode within the Layers palette. A precise selection wasn't necessary. I photographed the lightning strike near Phoenix, and the settings for that were 30 seconds, f/8, and Fujichrome Velvia (50 ISO). The horse settings were unrecorded, but they were probably 1/400, f/5.6, and Fujichrome Provia 100.
