The frog that everyone looks forward to photographing in my workshop is the red eye tree frog. It is not as small as the poison dart frogs, which means you can fill the frame with the entire body of the frog without any extension tubes. However, for a closeup of the face to underscore those amazing red eyes, one or two extension tubes are needed. Here, I used one tube in conjunction with a 50mm macro lens. As magnification increases, depth of field decreases. Therefore, it's important to use the smallest lens aperture on the lens. I used f/32 for this picture. Note how even the ventral side of the frog is illuminated nicely. That is due to the use of a ring flash. This frog looks great on any background, but red is especially dynamic. Back in the middle 80's, I produced a poster showing this species of frog in a red Gerber daisy with the caption 'I Only Have Eyes for You.'
