This 2-month old mountain lion cub still had blue eyes, and that makes this shot particularly captivating. It takes about 16 months for the blue eyes to change to yellow. I used a 400mm focal length which is why the background is so out of focus. I rarely use a tripod for wildlife because it’s too inhibiting; flexibility of movement is required to follow and photograph animals. Using a fast shutter speed eliminates the need for a tripod because sharp pictures are assured — assuming the focus is correct. This cub was part of my winter wildlife workshop in Montana. My settings were 1/1250, f/8, and 3200 ISO.
