Wolves seem like large and playful dogs until they bare their teeth. They are suddenly transformed into demons from hell that send chills up your spine. One of photo sessions during the winter wildlife workshop I conduct in Montana is with a wolf pack, and to watch and photograph these powerful animals interacting with each other is astonishing, thrilling, and frightening all at the same time. The sounds they make are vicious, and you feel like they are fighting to the death but, in reality, it's just rough play. They are extremely fast, so the juxtaposition of the wolves with each other changes every millisecond. Only by using a fast frame rate can you capture something good. The low light level in the early morning forced the ISO to be high, but I had to have a fast shutter to freeze the action and a lens aperture with some degree of depth of field to encompass all the animals. The last thing I wanted was any of the wolves to be less-than-sharp. My settings were 1/1250, f/9, and 6400 ISO.
