This is the picture I wanted to take the other night when I wasn't prepared for the mosquitos. This time, armed with repellant, just before dark I used a powerful flashlight to paint the swamp trees with light. It took a few tries to get the exposure right because I had to balance the exposure in the sky with the exposure from the flashlight. My settings were 20 seconds, f/11, and 640 ISO. I used a 24-105mm lens set to 35mm. With lengthy exposure times, a cable release or even a 2-second self-timer is not necessary because if there is a slight amount of camera movement or vibration from depressing the shutter, it's a small percentage of the entire exposure and therefore inconsequential. I shot this at Lake Martin, one of the exceptional places to photograph the primeval swamps of Louisiana. This is included in the itinerary of the photography tour I lead here.
