I photographed these mating white storks in Morocco. They had nested on top of a medieval mosaic-covered chimney, and they allowed a fairly close approach. My focal length was only 280mm (a 70-200mm plus a 1.4x teleconverter), and my settings were 1/640, f/11, and 320 ISO. This is a perfect example of where I feel the need to protect the vulnerable highlights from overexposing. To do that, I underexpose by 2/3 f/stop. In post-processsing, I use the exposure slider to lighten the image until it's correctly exposed and, at the same time, all of the texture and detail of the white feathers is clearly visible. As you can see, there is no increased noise as a result. As much as I like dramatic clouds, in this case I think the stark blue sky works well as a background.
