One of the indoor photo sessions I set up for my workshop in Venice is in a 16th century palace that is now a five star hotel. The decor is typical of medieval tastes. The large windows allow diffused light to enter the cavernous rooms, and this mixes with well placed wall sconces to create a beautiful atmosphere. I almost always photograph costumed models who wear masks, but for these special ladies I made an exception. This is Mona Rose and her sister, Annette, from Germany. Their stylish gowns and makeup are indicative of how people presented themselves at costume balls in medieval Europe. I used a 24-105mm lens, and my settings were 1/40, f/5.0, and 2500. Because of the mixed lighting, I used auto white balance.
