One of the most time-consuming composites I've done is this 18th century royal carriage from Portugal combined with a twilight shot from Lindau Island in Lake Constance, Germany. Because the carriage was indoors (in the National Carriage Museum in Lisbon), I had to use a scene with artificial lighting so the two pictures were believable together. Notice the ornate design all around the carriage. I used the pen tool in Photoshop working at 300% to make the meticulous selection. Adding the correct background light in the windows of the carriage was a challenge, but with a little trial and error I think it turned out well. My settings for the background shot were 6 seconds, f/8, and 200 ISO. I used a 16-35mm wide angle for the background and the same lens for the carriage.
