I photographed this wild jaguar in the Pantanal region of Brazil. 70% of their diet are caiman, so they spend a lot of time in the water hunting them. I took this shot from a boat with a Canon 500mm f/4 lens, and because of the movement of the small boat and the extreme magnification, I had to use a fast shutter speed to insure a sharp picture. When I lead a photo tour to the Pantanal, I have a choice between using a higher profile boat with built-in gimbal heads and comfortable seats or a lower profile boat that is comfortable enough but without the camera supports. I choose the latter because being closer to the water means capturing jaguars (and caiman, otters, and wading birds) from a lower vantage. I much prefer that eye-to-eye perspective. My settings were 1/1000, f/9, and 1600 ISO.
