I wish I could have photographed many of the large extinct animals of the past like dinosaurs, wooly mammoths, and sabre-toothed cats. How thrilling that would have been. But I was born too late and photography wasn't even on the radar then. So, I create dinosaur composites in Photoshop and do things like this. I bought a detailed replica of a sabre-toothed cat skull and put it in a large Tupperware tub of water. I put the tub in the freezer, and in 24 hours it was frozen solid. I took the frozen skull outside and poured warm water on the ice so it fractured a bit, simulating the frozen surface of a pond or river and suggesting I might have been hiking in the Arctic and stumbled across this amazing find. I photographed the skull in diffused light to minimize contrast and to accentuate the cool tones. My settings were 1/60, f/9, and 400 ISO, and I used a 50mm macro lens for the shot.
