These are Siberian husky puppies at 12 weeks. I had purchased the mini-sofa in Indonesia specifically to photograph puppies. I hung a piece of black velvet in the background and set this shoot up on my back patio. The lighting is entirely natural diffused daylight. I could have used a softbox and strobe, but this was easier and the quality of light is just as good. I find blue eyes in animals to be especially compelling. They really hold one's attention. My settings for this picture were 1/640, f/11, and 640 ISO, and I used a 200mm focal length. I paid special attention to the position of the puppies in that they needed to be equidistant to the camera to maintain sufficient depth of field. That would have been the only advantage of using a strobe -- that I could increase the light output so the smallest aperture, f/32, could have been used. I had two helpers, though, who managed the pups for me and they kept them on basically the same plane. When shooting puppies or kittens, it's essential to have help.
