Even in diffused light, like this street scene in Yangon, Burma, contrast can be too much for the digital sensor to handle. In the original RAW file, the white shirt of this sleeping bicycle taxi driver was overexposed while the deep shadows were largely devoid of detail and they went black. In order to deal with this problem (too much contrast with a loss of detail is usually considered undesirable), I used the highlight slider in Adobe Camera Raw to bring back detail in the shirt, and then I moved the shadow slider to the right to open up the shadows. Those two changes brought the contrast back to what I saw with my eyes. I then added some saturation to boost the colors.
