The most incredible church I’ve ever seen is the Church of the Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg, Russia. Every inch of the columns, the walls, and ceiling is covered in exquisite paintings and mosaics, and the design of the architecture itself adds to the truly awesome experience as soon as you step inside. For this shot, I stood on the graphic design in the marble floor that corresponded with the graphic art on the ceiling. This told me I was perfectly aligned, and when I aimed my Canon 1Dx Mark II straight up, I placed the center circle dead center in the frame to underscore the exquisite symmetry. I used Sigma’s new 14mm f/1.8 wide angle lens, and I did a hand held five frame HDR sequence of images at one f/stop apart in exposure. I used the camera’s ultra fast frame rate of 14 frames per second to minimize movement between the frames. I assembled the bracketed images in Photoshop, and the software aligned the five images perfectly. My lens aperture was set at f/5.6, and the ISO was 3200. In post-processing, I added clarity, vibrance, a touch of contrast, and I used the adjustment brush to lighten some of the shadows.
